Why does a Motor Carrier need a MCS-150?

The MCS-150 is a form mandated by the FMCSA and is the official mechanism for reporting the composition and operational details of a motor carrier to the USDOT.

What is on the MCS-150?

The MCS-150 form is required by the USDOT to document and understand the type of business a motor carrier operates. While the full document is 11 pages, the first 7 pages provide detailed instructions for completing the three-page form itself (pages 9–11). These instructions are intended to help motor carriers provide accurate information, as errors or misinformation may negatively impact a carrier’s safety scores. Certain BASIC scores are calculated, in part, using data reported on the MCS-150.

How does a Motor Carrier update a MCS-150?

Motor carriers are required to update their MCS-150 via the FMCSA Portal. To maintain uninterrupted access, a motor carrier must log in to the FMCSA Portal at least every 90 days; accounts will be disabled following 90 days of inactivity and archived after 12 months. If an account is disabled or archived, the motor carrier must contact the FMCSA to request reactivation.

The FMCSA also accepts the MCS-150 form by email, but it must also be accompanied by a copy of government-issued identification and any supporting documentation. The form can also be submitted at a FMCSA ticketing portal. Motor carrier's who submit the form by email or via a ticketing portal will require up to 120 days of processing. Online submission via the FMCSA Portal is strongly encouraged for faster and more secure service
